Types of teaching jobs

Compare the kind of work before choosing a school.

Hagwon (Private Academy)

Morning programs run 9am–5/6pm. After-school academies run from about 1pm to 9pm or 2pm to 10pm, with roughly 30 teaching hours a week. Classes are small, usually 5–11 students. Starting salary is 2.4–2.5M KRW/month with housing included. With teaching experience or a related degree, pay starts at 2.6M or more, and 3.0M+ is possible.

Public School

Standard 9am–5pm hours, 20–22 teaching hours a week, and 18–26 vacation days a year. Salary is 2.1–3.0M KRW/month, depending on your level. Most placements are outside Seoul. If you're open to that, it's a stable, government-backed position with more time off.

Adult & Corporate English

Teaching working adults at offices or language centers. Classes run during the day or early evening, with no children and more conversation. Teachers with a business or subject background can earn more.

Part-Time Positions

Flexible roles at smaller academies and tutoring centers. Open to teachers already on an eligible visa who want extra income or a lighter schedule.

Questions before you apply

What is OK Recruiting?

We are a government-licensed recruitment agency based in Seoul, helping English teachers find jobs in Korea since 2006. Schools pay our recruitment fee, so we don’t charge teachers. About OK Recruiting.

Will you help me with the visa process and arriving in Korea?

Yes. We guide you through preparing and checking your documents, the E-2 visa process, and planning your arrival. Your school applies for visa issuance confirmation in Korea, and you complete the visa application at a Korean consulate. We explain the steps and help you prepare.

Do I need teaching experience or a TEFL certificate?

Some positions accept first-time teachers. A TEFL certificate can help with classroom preparation and your application, but hagwon requirements vary. EPIK generally requires a 100-hour-plus TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certificate unless you qualify through an education-related degree or teaching licence. Our guide compares two accredited, fully online 120-hour courses. Compare online TEFL courses.

Are working hours the same as teaching hours?

Working hours are the time you are required to be at school. Teaching hours are time spent in class: six 40-minute lessons, for example, total four hours of teaching. The rest of the working day may include preparation, meetings and other duties. A sample timetable shows how these fit together.

How do I compare salaries when the housing benefits are different?

Separate the base salary from any housing allowance. With provided housing, identify the bills or charges you would pay. With an allowance, account for rent and any deposit you must arrange. Compare the teaching load and required hours at school alongside those costs, rather than judging the offer by salary alone.

What should I ask a current teacher before accepting an offer?

Ask whether you can speak with a teacher at the same campus. Useful questions include: How many classes did you teach yesterday? When do you prepare lessons? What is the apartment like? Were your pay and vacation arrangements as agreed? Compare their answers with your own offer; their contract may be different.
